More funds from the current EU budget will be used for defense.
This is stated in an agreement that has been reached between the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Danish EU presidency.
The Ministry of Defense writes this in a press release on Wednesday evening.
The agreement is part of the plan for the rearmament of Europe – the so-called ReArm Europe plan.
The recently concluded agreement specifically means that a number of existing EU programs have been adjusted so that they can be used to finance defense-related projects to a greater extent over the next two years, it is stated.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen (V) believes that the agreement is an example of how the EU can bring concrete measures into play that can support the rearmament of Europe.
– It is therefore also another milestone in the work to ensure the EU’s defense readiness towards 2030, he says.
The adjustments of a number of EU programs are intended to ensure more investments in defense technologies, innovation, and technologies for so-called dual use – that is, for both civilian and military applications.
The press release does not specify how much additional funding is expected to be invested in defense as a result of the recently concluded agreement.
Furthermore, for the first time, it has been possible to agree on associating Ukraine with the European Defense Fund. The purpose of the fund is to integrate and strengthen the European defense industry.
It is not specified exactly what an association entails, but it is referred to in the press release as a significant step towards Ukraine’s integration into the European defense industry.
– With today’s agreement, we send a clear signal that Europe is working purposefully to ensure a strengthened defense towards 2030.
– The agreement will enable more investments in defense technology and research. This is positive – because we need it, writes European Minister Marie Bjerre (V) in the press release.
The agreement to encourage defense-related investments has been made following a recently concluded agreement on the European Defense Industrial Program (EDIP), which includes financial support of around 11 billion kroner for the European defense industry.
