Mateusz Morawiecki (Law and Justice) assessed that the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union on same-sex marriages is a “shameless, brazen interference in the legal order, the family law order of EU member states.”
There can absolutely be no consent to this on our part, Poland cannot be a puppet in the hands of the judges of the Court of Justice of the European Union, he added.
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled at the end of November, in the context of a case from Poland, that a member state is obliged to recognize the marriage of a same-sex couple legally concluded in another European Union country, even if the law of that state does not recognize such unions.
During a Monday press conference, Morawiecki assessed that the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union deeply interferes in the affairs of the member states of the European Union and is crucial for the functioning of Polish families.
“It orders member states to recognize homosexual marriages that are concluded in another member country. It is a bit as if, in the case of the legalization of drugs – and there are such countries in the European Union – Poland also had to respect the import of drugs into our country, because in another country, for example in the Netherlands, such a law has been guaranteed,” said Morawiecki.
He added that “there can be no consent to this on our part, and sovereignty is an absolutely fundamental condition for the functioning of member states.” “The European Union must deal with topics that are key today – competitiveness, reducing problems with the Green Deal (…), the migration pact, these are the topics that the European Union must cope with. Meanwhile, we are dealing with a shameless, brazen interference in the legal order, the family law order of the member states,” assessed the Law and Justice politician. (1.12.2025)
