Prague – It is impossible to overlook the rise of support for extremists in Europe, it is necessary to perceive these voices and consider why this is happening. President Petr Pavel stated this in a statement to ČTK regarding the results of the weekend’s European Parliament elections. At the same time, he believes that the fundamental value direction of the EU in matters of security or democracy will not change after the elections.
Pavel also congratulated the elected MEPs and thanked the voters. “Participation reached 36 percent, making it the highest since our entry into the EU. Even so, we are still at the bottom of the average participation within the union,” he added.
The ANO movement again won the elections and will have seven MEPs, one more than before. The coalition of the government parties Spolu, namely ODS, KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09, came second, retaining six seats, losing two mandates. Further in the European Parliament, Přísaha with Motorists, the coalition Enough! led by KSČM, Mayors and Personalities for Europe, Pirates, and SPD with Tricolor will be represented.
Former President Miloš Zeman wrote in a Facebook statement that his expectation that the European elections would be a referendum on government policy was confirmed. “I appreciate the results of the ANO movement. I was surprised at how successfully Mr. (leader of the Přísaha with Motorists candidate Filip) Turek performed, whereas I expected a similar performance from Kateřina Konečná (KSČM, Enough!). Of the government parties, the Pirates fared the worst, but in essence, none of the government parties can claim any success,” he stated. The far-right will significantly strengthen in the European Parliament. The largest EPP group remains roughly at the same support level and the Greens group has deteriorated the most.
