The interior ministers of Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia Boštjan Poklukar, Matteo Piantedosi, and Davor Božinović assessed at a meeting in Gorizia, Italy, on Tuesday that cooperation yields good results in the fight against illegal migration. Therefore, they hope that it will be possible to abolish control at the internal Schengen borders as soon as possible, but they did not announce any concrete steps.
The issue of migration cannot be solved overnight, but I believe that we will soon reach a common solution that will replace internal border control, Poklukar said after the talks.
According to him, an alternative to internal border control could be joint police patrols at the external Schengen border. Slovenia is ready to participate in such patrols, which would monitor the border mainly between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, but there is currently no willingness for this in Zagreb.
Slovenia has extended control on the border with Croatia until December 21, but according to Poklukar, this will not cause major delays at the border between the countries during the summer tourist season. Italy has also extended control on the border with Slovenia until December. (June 18)
