Brussels – The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, intends to leave the appointment of the new special envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue to his successor, explained a senior EU official. Therefore, he decided to extend the mandate of the current envoy, Miroslav Lajčak. Former President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, has also expressed interest in this position.
“The High Representative for Foreign Affairs decided to extend Lajčak’s mandate for a few months. The reason is quite simple. The High Representative is the mediator in the dialogue, and the special envoy is his right and left hand. High Representative Borrell therefore believes that the appointment of a new envoy should be left to his successor,” said a senior European official to STA.
In the EU, intensive discussions are taking place regarding the distribution of leading positions in EU institutions following the recent European elections. Part of the staffing puzzle is also the position of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, which is expected to go to Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
Interest in succeeding Lajčak in the position was expressed in early April by former Slovenian President Pahor. (June 21)
