Brussels – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg could accommodate Slovakia in securing air defense. Shortly before a working meeting with the head of the North Atlantic Alliance, this was stated on Friday morning in Brussels by the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, reports TASR correspondent.
The President, after the conclusion of the two-day EU summit, reminded that after bilateral talks with the three highest representatives of the EU institutions, he still has a meeting with the NATO Secretary General, which will be their second meeting.
Pellegrini added in this context that the heads of governments and states said farewell at the summit to Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who will replace Stoltenberg from October 2 this year.
“We will talk about Slovakia’s 20-year membership in NATO, I want to inform him that Slovakia is a responsible ally and partner, and that the level of spending on the renewal and modernization of the armed forces will reach 2.11 percent,” Pellegrini outlined the main topics of the talks.
At the same time, he added that during the mutual conversation, he will emphasize the need to protect Slovak airspace, which today is not protected by either a missile system or other equipment.
“I will ask him to indicate the possibilities where we could enter into cooperation with one of the allies who could temporarily provide their defense systems and place them somewhere near the eastern borders of Slovakia,” the president said. This would, according to him, prevent the penetration of a stray missile or even targeted attacks by a third party into our space. (June 28)
