Brussels – Additional assurances from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding the proposal for the long-term EU budget 2028-2034 (MFF) are, in Slovenia’s opinion, going in the right direction, said State Secretary at the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Neva Grašič on the sidelines of the EU ministers’ meeting on European affairs. She emphasized the importance of a greater role for regions, as well as the size of the MFF.

“We assess that the European Commission is moving in the right direction. Negotiations are ongoing, and until they are concluded, nothing is agreed,” Grašič said regarding the additional assurances about the role of regions and support for rural areas that von der Leyen provided last week in response to criticisms from the European Parliament on the proposal for the upcoming long-term EU budget.

According to the State Secretary, these additional assurances, particularly regarding the powers of regions, could also address concerns in Slovenia related to the proposal.

For Slovenia, the financial volume of the MFF is crucial, which, according to the current proposal, would amount to just under 2000 billion euros.

“Slovenia is striving for an even larger envelope so that we can, of course, receive a larger share of funds from it,” the State Secretary emphasized. According to current calculations, Slovenia would receive around 4.8 billion euros in European funds in the financial perspective 2028-34, while it currently has approximately 4.95 billion euros available, she explained. In the negotiations, Slovenia will strive to approach this figure, Grašič added.

Negotiations among member states on the upcoming MFF are still in the initial phase. Leaders of member states will hold the first discussion on the proposal presented by the Commission in July at a meeting in Brussels in a month, with the aim of reaching an agreement by the end of next year.
