Brussels – Green MEPs are likely to be significantly fewer in the next European Parliament, according to forecasts reflecting the dilution of environmental concerns and the uncertain future of a Green Deal that has become a scarecrow they call to save and expand.
In 2019, 72 Green MPs (including 25 Germans and 12 French) entered the European Parliament, a record level that made them the fourth political group, after a campaign dominated by youth climate marches, prompting Brussels to launch an ambitious package of environmental legislation.
Many have been adopted. However, the Greens should not benefit from this in the election, from Thursday to Sunday, where some 370 million voters are called to the polls: polls predict them barely 40 seats out of a total of 720 MEPs, and in France, they are not even sure to reach the 5% allowing them to keep elected officials.
