Košice – Slovakia has received more than 135 million euros from the European Union (EU) for the modernization of railway lines and the enhancement of railway transport safety. The European Commission (EC) has approved funding for projects in Slovakia from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). These funds will help modernize railway lines and increase the safety of railway transport, stated the State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic, Denisa Žiláková, as reported by TASR.

After the official handover of the grant agreement for specific projects in Košice, representatives of the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic, the EC, the Railways of the Slovak Republic (ŽSR), the Slovak Railway Company (ZSSK), and the Cargo Slovakia Railway Company (ZSSK Cargo) informed.

“We are signing contracts with the European Commission worth 135 million euros, thanks to which we will modernize railway lines and increase the safety of railway transport. European funds have long helped us improve the quality and reliability of railways, and due to our preparedness and the quality of our projects, Slovakia was among the most successful countries in the EU in this round of CEF calls,” stated Denisa Žiláková.

Slovakia received eight percent of the funds that were available from the CEF for all 27 European countries in this call. A total of 96.7 million euros is allocated for the modernization of the railway line section Spišská Nová Ves – Spišské Tomášovce. An additional 27.3 million euros will be used to prepare and modernize the Košice – Čierna nad Tisou line, which includes the reconstruction of the traction substation in Ruskovo and the switchyard in Barca. More than five million euros will be allocated for the installation of a modern ETCS signaling system in the trains of ZSSK and ZSSK Cargo.

In the case of ZSSK, the project will install the ETCS system in 29 passenger locomotives, and in ZSSK Cargo, it will be installed in 23 freight locomotives. According to Žiláková, such a system would have prevented the train collision that occurred in October in the Rožňava district.

The Ministry clarified that these investments will allow for shorter travel times, increased safety, and prepare Slovak lines for the operation of modern trains with ETCS technology. (November 5)
