BRUSSELS – The European Commission confirmed that it has decided to temporarily withhold the payment of 215 million euros from Bulgaria’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). On Monday, the payment of 439 million euros for the country was approved, a commission spokesperson clarified for BTA.
The suspension of part of the funds is related to the failure to date to meet the goal of ensuring a politically independent Commission for Counteracting Corruption. Bulgaria has a deadline of six months to meet the requirement. The EC will remain in close contact with the Bulgarian authorities to provide the necessary support, the spokesperson added.
At the beginning of October, the EC announced that it had sent a letter to our country requesting a response within one month regarding the unmet requirement. At that time, the commission clarified that if the conditions are not met, the payment of the withheld funds will be postponed for another six months. Days earlier, the commission gave preliminary approval for Bulgaria’s second request for payment under the RRP for 653 million euros.
The Bulgarian RRP has a total value of 6.17 billion euros in grants. (November 5)
