Luxembourg – Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon emphasized at the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg that the situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza remains very fragile and uncertain despite the ceasefire. She stressed the need to focus on maintaining and monitoring the ceasefire and supported an active role for the European Union in the peace process in the Middle East.
In addition to the ceasefire, she stated that immediate, unhindered, and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza is necessary in cooperation with United Nations agencies. Israel must urgently open more crossings and allow the evacuation of the wounded, Fajon emphasized, adding that journalists must be ensured safe and unhindered access to Gaza so they can freely and independently carry out their work.
In the discussion at the Foreign Ministers’ meeting, she also pointed out that the ultimate goal of the peace process must be a two-state solution and that it is essential to continue strengthening the Palestinian Authority, which must be involved in the reconstruction and future arrangements for Gaza, the Slovenian Foreign Ministry reported.
At the meeting, she also welcomed the efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump for peace in Ukraine. She expressed hope that the announced meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest would bear fruit and represent a step towards the long-awaited peace.
“It is essential that Ukraine is included in all discussions about peace,” Fajon said during the discussion at the meeting. (October 20)
