BRUSSELS – The European Parliament (EP) has approved a non-binding resolution calling for the minimum age for access to social media and artificial intelligence (AI) to be 16 years old to ensure that online content is age-appropriate.
On the EP website, it was announced that lawmakers urged EU member states to adopt laws establishing a minimum age of 16 for access to social media and AI, while allowing access for individuals aged 13 to 16 with parental consent. They also called for the adoption of laws that would prohibit access to social media and AI for individuals under the age of 13, Reuters reported. The adopted resolution has no legal weight and serves as a political statement expressing the EP’s position on the matter.
Under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), online platforms are required to comply with the laws of EU member states, which allow each country to decide on the minimum age for access to social media and AI. (November 26)
