BRUSSELS – The European Commission (EC) has granted 235 cross-border energy projects the status of projects of common or mutual interest. The list of these projects includes support for connecting the hydrogen transmission networks between Bulgaria and Greece, as well as for improving the gas transmission capacities between the two countries.

The selected projects will receive permits through accelerated implementation procedures in order to ensure energy connectivity and security in the European Union. According to data from the EC, cited in the announcement, investment needs in European energy infrastructure will reach nearly 1.5 trillion euros by 2040.

Of the overall list, 113 projects are for electricity, 100 are for hydrogen and electrolysis, 17 are for carbon transmission, three are for smart gas transmission grids.

The Commission plans to soon present legislative changes for the further development of the necessary energy infrastructure in Europe. The presented list is subject to coordination with the European Parliament and with the Council of the EU in the next two months. This period may be doubled at the discretion of the European institutions.

Since 2014, eight billion euros have been provided for flagship projects related to the development of transmission networks in the EU. The Commission has proposed in the next multiannual budget (2028-2034) a fivefold increase of the budget for similar purposes from 5.84 billion euros to 29.91 billion euros, the announcement states.
