FRANKFURT/SOFIA – Bulgaria is in the final stage of long and persistent efforts, emphasized on Sunday the President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde in a post on social media.

Only 25 days remain until Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area, Lagarde wrote on “Facebook”.

On 1 December, when in Bulgaria the sale of starter kits with euro coins with a Bulgarian national side began, Lagarde also published a message on the topic on her profile.

One month until Bulgaria’s accession to the euro and the new Bulgarian coins are heading towards the euro area, Lagarde noted then.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov, together with the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank Dimitar Radev, became acquainted with the production process of the Bulgarian euro coins at the BNB Mint.

The Bulgarian euro coins will be legal tender throughout Europe and will bear Bulgarian national symbols. Thus our country will be part of the European cultural and monetary heritage, said Prime Minister Zhelyazkov.

He noted that all euro coins have the same obverse side for the whole of Europe, and on the other side – national symbols characteristic of each euro area member state.

The Bulgarian series of euro coins includes established national symbols, figures and sites from the national history and cultural heritage of the country. On the coin with a denomination of 2 euro Paisiy Hilendarski is depicted – a Bulgarian monk, clergyman and educator, author of the Revival-era work “Istoriya slavyanobalgarska”, the coin with a denomination of 1 euro presents the image of Saint Ivan Rilski – a spiritual leader, hermit and miracle worker, considered the heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people. The coins with a denomination of 50, 20, 10, 5 and 2 cents bear the image of the Madara Rider – a rock relief from the 8th century, included in the World Cultural Heritage List.

From 1 December in the country the sale began of starter kits with Bulgarian euro coins for citizens and businesses. The kit for individuals consists of 42 euro coins of all denominations with a total value of 10 euro and 23 cents and is sold at a price of 20 leva for one starter kit. (7.12.2025)
