SOFIA – Bulgaria will participate as a host country under the Financial Mechanism for Renewable Energy, decided the Bulgarian caretaker government in connection with an invitation sent to the country by the Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission to declare binding interest for 2026.

The EC plans to announce a procedure under the Financial Mechanism through which investment support will be provided for projects implemented on the territory of Bulgaria and Finland as host countries. The financial resource is provided by Luxembourg, and the total budget under the procedure is 55 million euros.

Projects for ground-mounted photovoltaic plants with battery storage systems in Bulgaria and those for ground-mounted photovoltaic systems in Finland will be financed.

In Bulgaria, the projects will be in the three coal regions – Pernik, Kyustendil and Stara Zagora, and the facilities must operate for at least 15 years after their commissioning.

The management of the procedure – the announcement of the call, the collection and evaluation of project proposals and the monitoring of their implementation – will be carried out by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. Public or private legal entities from any country in the world may apply for funding.

Bulgaria’s participation in the Financial Mechanism as a host country will provide investment support for combined projects for the construction of photovoltaic plants with energy storage systems, which will make it possible to increase the installed capacities using solar energy and to increase the consumption of environmentally friendly energy in the country. The territorial location of the projects in the three coal regions of the country will complement the financial instruments applied under the territorial just transition plans and will support the energy transition of these regions, the government press service said in a statement.
