Berlin (dpa) – In view of the violence against demonstrators in Iran, the German European politician Manfred Weber is calling for the remaining EU embassies in the country to be opened to persecuted Iranians. “We must protect them from the terror regime. Let us open all embassies of EU countries in Iran as shelters, so that the peaceful demonstrators can find refuge there,” said the head of the conservative European People’s Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament to the newspaper “Bild”. “The deadly violence of the mullah regime against peaceful demonstrators cannot be justified in any way. The courageous opposition in Iran deserves our full support,” the politician explained his initiative.
Previously, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, had demanded significantly stronger support from the governments of the EU member states for the protests against the state leadership in Iran. Metsola herself had already banned all official representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran from entering the premises of the European Parliament on Monday.
According to the human rights organization Hengaw, more than 2,500 people have lost their lives in Iran since the protests began. Iran’s security apparatus is systematically cracking down on the mass protests. The protests have now subsided. (January 14)
