Brussels – The European Food Safety Authority Efsa will investigate potential health risks from microplastics in the air, food and water.
“It is good that Efsa is given this task because there is still a great lack of knowledge in this area,” says Salomon Sand, toxicologist at the Swedish authority the National Food Agency, in a press release.
Efsa, which received the assignment from the EU Parliament, will produce a scientific basis. Among other things, the authority will look at how the presence in food can be measured and how microplastics enter and affect the human body.
The assignment is expected to be completed at the end of 2027.
