Madrid (dpa) – The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, is calling on US President Donald Trump to exert greater influence on Russian President Vladimir Putin to put an end to the war in Ukraine.

“I think the United States also has the role to put more pressure on Russia to stop this war,” the former prime minister of Estonia said at a meeting with European foreign ministers in the Spanish capital Madrid on Monday.

Russia must agree to a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine and take a step forward, she said. This could, for example, consist of returning deported Ukrainian children or releasing prisoners of war.

In addition to Kallas, representatives of France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain and the UK, as well as EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, participated in the discussions on the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine.

A joint declaration also addressed the current efforts by Trump to secure a ceasefire.

Kubilius called for the immediate implementation of the rearmament strategy recently presented by the European Commission. He warned that merely reading this out to Putin would not deter him. (March 31)
