Ljubljana – The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved over 14 million euros of European funds for a public call for co-financing research and development and demonstration-pilot projects in the Zasavje and Savinja-Šaleška coal mining regions under the Just Transition Fund.

“We want to support at least 23 consortia of companies in both coal mining regions that will implement projects for the development of new or improved products, processes, or services with higher added value and market potential, which in turn increases the competitiveness of the economy,” the ministry announced.

“Thus, the non-repayable European funds from the Just Transition Fund will be used for the economic restructuring of the Zasavje and Savinja-Šaleška coal mining regions towards a transition to a low-carbon, circular, and digital economy,” emphasized the responsible minister Aleksander Jevšek.

For the Zasavje coal mining region, 4.42 million euros will be allocated, while 10 million euros will be allocated for the Savinja-Šaleška region. The mentioned call is part of the activities for the restructuring of both coal mining regions, which will be supported by more than 250 million euros from the EU Just Transition Fund, and it is expected to be completed by 2033 at the latest.
