Poland cannot be detached from the European Union because it is an integral part of it,” emphasized on Wednesday the Deputy Prime Minister, head of the Ministry of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, when asked about reports concerning an alleged “internal” U.S. Security Strategy that was supposedly aimed at detaching, among others, Poland from the European Union.
On Friday, the U.S. administration published the official U.S. Security Strategy, in which it was emphasized that American policy on Europe should treat as a priority, among other things, a return to strategic stability in relations with Russia, enabling Europe to take responsibility for its own defense, and preventing further NATO enlargement.
The Defense One portal later reported that there is a longer, internal version of the White House strategy, which contains a more detailed description of planned actions, among other things, toward the EU. According to the portal, in the unpublished version of the strategy, U.S. policy toward Europe was to focus on cooperation with several countries “in order to detach them” from the European Union. The group of these countries included: Poland, Austria, Hungary, and Italy. The White House denied these reports.
During Wednesday’s press conference, Kosiniak-Kamysz was asked about these reports and emphasized that Poland cannot be detached from the European Union because it is an integral part of it.
At the same time, he added that “we want changes in the European Union, we want less bureaucracy in the European Union, we want more security, we want more clear, transparent rules.”
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Poland is “distinguished as a model ally” by the U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. “We supported the United States in Iraq, in Afghanistan, after the attacks on the World Trade Center,” noted Kosiniak-Kamysz.
“It was Poland that was the first to help, and I believe that it can count on this help. We are counting on an increase in the presence of American troops in Poland and we have no signals that it is to be otherwise. The contingent is maintained, there are plans to increase it, for which I am very grateful,” stressed the head of the Ministry of National Defense.
In Kosiniak-Kamysz’s view, the part of the American strategy concerning relations with Russia “will particularly disappoint American business and will disappoint some American politicians, because it will never be fulfilled.” “It is simply not credible. But I understand that it is written largely for internal use, and we respect the right of the United States to conduct its policy in the way that voters there have decided on,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He emphasized that Poland is “a transatlantic link connecting Europe with the United States” and that Poland must build “the architecture of European security.”
In the unpublished version of the strategy, there is also mention of creating a new international format of cooperation called Core 5 (C5), which would include the USA, China, Russia, India, and Japan – without the participation of the European Union or any state that is part of it. The group would deal, among other things, with the issue of security in the Middle East.
