Brussels – Leaders of 19 EU countries, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, are calling for the European Union to review, limit, and reduce its regulations in the interest of maintaining competitiveness. Representatives of the EU states state this in a joint letter addressed to the President of the European Council Charles Michel, which is available to ČTK.

In a three-page letter, the leaders recall last year’s report by former European Central Bank Governor Mario Draghi on the poor state of EU competitiveness. Draghi warned at the time that the EU must invest a huge amount of money in a relatively short time to keep pace with the United States.

“We want to preserve the European Union for what it represents – freedom, security, and prosperity. To do so, we must change its course. Not just a little, but significantly,” the representatives of the EU countries state ahead of Thursday’s EU summit.

“Three steps are now essential: review, reduce, limit. We call for a systematic review of all EU regulations to identify those rules that are redundant, excessive, or unbalanced,” write the representatives of the member states. In the letter, they propose that the European Commission systematically review the EU regulatory framework by the end of the year and suggest how to remove outdated or excessive rules, while also wanting to maintain current political goals and the integrity of the single market.

“Now let’s get to work. Let’s add. Slowing down is not an option,” the leaders conclude their letter. (October 21)
