On November 5 and 12, the European Newsroom (enr) had the pleasure of welcoming future journalism professionals from Belgian KU Leuven university for the first time. During the sessions, enr staff members explained to more than 80 students and professors the enr’s philosophy, how it operates, and the benefits that 23 news agencies gain from participating in the project.
The venue for the discussion was the headquarters of enr partner agency, Belga. For the students, it was a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the workings of a news agency and to learn more about one of its projects.

On November 5, Editorial & Organisational Manager Tim Kohnen presented the joint spirit, the tasks and working methods of the European Newsroom in Dutch, the language of the participants. He then answered their many questions and suggestions.
On November 12, Editorial Director Christian Röwekamp introduced the origins, characteristics and media products of the project. Belga’s Editor-in-Chief, Hans Vandendriessche, also joined the session to discuss the day-to-day work of a news agency and take part in a Q&A session. Finally, Editorial Manager Ángela García López delivered an interactive quiz to consolidate the new knowledge in a dynamic setting.

Both students and professors welcomed the opportunity to explore the mechanisms of EU-focused journalism. For the enr, it was invaluable to meet future professionals and learn how to improve its outreach from their perspective.
