STRASBOURG – The committee of the European Parliament believes that all sectors must contribute to reducing emissions and achieving climate neutrality. The EU must continue to set ambitious goals, according to the Members of the European Parliament. There is an “urgent need” to end dependence on fossil fuels.
EU ministers confirmed earlier this week that the EU wants to play a “central role” at COP30. This has also been the case in previous years. However, EU member states have not yet succeeded in making firm agreements on reducing emissions by 2035. The deadline for establishing these climate ambitions has already passed.
The EU wants to first agree on a climate target for 2040. EU leaders will discuss this again on Thursday. It has been proposed that emissions in 2040 should be 90 percent lower than in 1990. The EU has previously expressed its aim to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
