Brussels – Executive Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy Stéphane Séjourné and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič presented on Wednesday in Brussels a legislative package aimed at strengthening the EU’s economic security. Šefčovič specified for the Brussels correspondent of TASR that the openness of the European economy without ensuring its security means vulnerability.
Maroš Šefčovič recalled that the European Commission presented a new communication on economic security, which focuses precisely on the fact that as soon as Europe finds itself in a situation where it obtains either rare earths or sensitive technologies from a single source, it is very easy to put the European economy under pressure.
“I think we have experienced this quite often in the recent period. That is also why the measures we are proposing for the future consist in the fact that we want to motivate both the member states and also European industry to expand the number of their suppliers for critical components or critical supplies, so that we simply have greater economic security,” Šefčovič described the situation.
According to him, Wednesday’s communication is only the beginning of a long process, in which the EC is counting on help from the member countries of the euro area and also from industry.
“Basically, we are now focusing on launching this whole process. The first steps will be the creation of an information hub, where we also want to rely on the intelligence information that EU institutions and member countries have at their disposal. At the same time, we want to create a network of advisers for national economic security in each member country, who would work closely with us. And likewise a network of advisers from those sensitive sectors of the European economy that are most exposed to economic pressure, so that together we can analyze the situation and adopt the necessary measures,” explained the Slovak European Commissioner.
