Strasbourg – The EU Parliament demands the immediate release of Swedish-Chinese publisher Gui Minhai.
The support is expressed in a non-binding resolution that was passed overwhelmingly on Thursday with 546 votes in favor, 3 against, and 44 abstentions. All Swedish members voted in favor.
Gui Minhai was first arrested in October 2015 and was sentenced in 2020 to ten years in prison, accused of “providing foreign powers with intelligence.” He previously lived in Hong Kong where his publishing house Mighty Current published books that portrayed the Chinese leadership in a less flattering light.
