Bratislava – Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico (Smer-SD) spoke by phone on Monday with German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to his own words, he told him that on Tuesday he would send an open letter to the President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen and that he is bringing it to the attention of all prime ministers and heads of EU member states. The Press and Information Department of the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic informed TASR about this.
According to Robert Fico, world leaders do not take the EU completely seriously, which can be attributed to “nonsensical climate goals and suicidal migration policy.”
“I proposed several solutions to the Federal Chancellor and I hope that he will visit Slovakia soon, as he promised. We have things to talk about,” Fico stated. According to him, several hundred German companies operate in Slovakia and the Slovak economy is particularly dependent on German economic development due to the enormous concentration of car production.
Fico stated that he discussed the current “serious international situation” with Friedrich Merz. According to his own words, he mainly outlined to him the conversation with US President Donald Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which he held on Saturday (17 January) at Trump’s residence Mar-a-Lago in the city of Palm Beach, Florida.
“The President of the USA is clearly pursuing the nation-state interests of the USA. If the EU acted in this way, we would be in a completely different place than we are now,” claims the Slovak Prime Minister. He noted that world leaders do not take the European Union completely seriously.
During their meeting in Florida, Fico and Trump touched on several topics, including the war in Ukraine, the European Union and mutual bilateral relations, the Press and Information Department of the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic reported after the meeting. (19 January)
