BELGRADE – The Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić spoke with the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia, Ambassador Andreas von Bekerat, about the continuation of reform processes in the judiciary and specific issues related to improving the rule of law, as well as activities carried out within the framework of Serbia’s accession process to the European Union.
During the talks, special attention was devoted to the further harmonization of national legislation with the EU acquis, strengthening the independence of the judiciary and the autonomy of the public prosecution, as well as the efficiency and transparency of the judiciary as a whole, the Ministry of Justice announced. Vujić emphasized the commitment of the Ministry of Justice and the Government of Serbia to continue implementing reform processes in accordance with strategic goals and international obligations, with continuous cooperation with the institutions of the European Union. He particularly referred to the future analysis of the work of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime, in the preparation of which, from the very beginning, in addition to the relevant domestic institutions and professional associations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, GRECO and others will be included, which has already been highlighted and welcomed by the European Commission at the meeting of the Stabilisation and Association Committee. With the aim of improving the efficiency and accessibility of justice for citizens, Vujić also pointed during the meeting to possible changes and improvements to the network of Belgrade judicial bodies, in order to address the European Commission’s objections regarding the efficiency of the judiciary’s work.
Von Bekerat emphasized the importance of dialogue and partnership cooperation in the field of justice, as well as the support of the European Union for Serbia’s further progress in implementing reforms within the process of European integration. The interlocutors agreed that the continuation of regular communication and cooperation is of key importance for achieving concrete results in the field of the rule of law, the statement concludes.
