Brussels – The EU foreign ministers have now formally approved their latest sanctions package regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine, following the green light at ambassador level last week.
The package mainly includes new individuals, companies, and others who will have their possible assets frozen and not be granted entry visas to the EU.
Among other things, an additional 50 or so ships in the so-called “shadow fleet” that helps Russia circumvent previous sanctions against the country’s gas and oil trade are listed.
The work on the next sanctions package is already underway.
“Oil and gas make up two-thirds of the revenue for the Russian war chest, so it’s important that we constantly try to expand the sanctions. Then Russia tries to say it has no effect, but it’s just propaganda for us to stop this,” says Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard at the venue for Monday’s meeting in Brussels.
She also wants to see sanctions against Georgia, due to the authorities’ harsh crackdown on recent government-critical demonstrations.
“It should be noticeable and felt,” she says.
