Budapest – The Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó today at a joint press conference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Timcho Mutsunski once again emphasized the support that Hungary is giving to our country for EU membership, but also stressed that both countries are for peace in Ukraine, which they have demonstrated by supporting the US Resolution at the UN.
– We and the Republic of North Macedonia are on the side of peace. We support President Trump and also the success of the US-Russian talks because we clearly see that peace can only be achieved through a US-Russian agreement. Macedonians and Hungarians are interested in the return of peace, as demonstrated by our cooperation last week at the UN when we supported the US Resolution. In the end, the US proposal was adopted, Szijjártó said at the joint press conference in Budapest.
He emphasized that the return of peace is not only in the interest of North Macedonia and Hungary but of everyone, because, as he said, the strengthening of the economy of the countries and the EU depends on peace and the expansion of the EU towards the Western Balkans.
– The EU needs fresh strength, and that can only come from the Western Balkans, Szijjártó said, who believes that currently, the interest of the EU in the accession of some countries is greater than that of the countries themselves.
According to him, “a large number of countries are behaving hypocritically and this contributes to the erosion of trust among Western Balkan countries.” We constantly hear that the decision for EU membership should be based on merit, and Hungary agrees with that, Szijjártó pointed out, emphasizing that this principle should be applied to everyone.
– It cannot be considered a merit if there are disagreements between a member state and a candidate country. As you have seen, we have always advocated for the full membership of the Republic of North Macedonia in the EU, and that is why we signed this agreement today, said the head of Hungarian diplomacy.
Szijjártó said that we have a great chance for the future “because thanks to changes on the other side of the Atlantic, now the chance for the return of peace in Europe is increasing.” – But, unfortunately, there are also forces trying everything to prevent President Trump’s peace agreement, he said at the press conference.
