Support of Bulgarians for European Union membership is increasing

SOFIA – In recent months, there has been an increase in Bulgarians’ support for the country’s membership in the European Union, according to a nationally representative survey by the agency “Alpha Research,” conducted at the end of February.

From September to February, support for the country’s membership in the EU has increased by 4% – from 57 to 61 percent, which is close to the historically highest values for this indicator (64%). Negative opinions remain four times lower (15 percent), and those hesitant to express a position are one quarter.

On the question of what position Bulgaria should take when there is a divergence between the positions of the US and Europe, public attitudes are categorical. A total of 59% of Bulgarians believe that Bulgaria should support the common positions of the EU, to strengthen its unity and strength.

The opposing position – that Bulgaria should adhere to the positions of the US because they are stronger, is supported by 14% of the adult Bulgarian citizens. A total of 27% cannot express an opinion on this issue.
The only voters, among whom, albeit slightly, the support for the US position in its relations with the EU prevails, are those of the party “Revival” (39% against 34%).

The countries that make the greatest efforts for Europe to begin actively asserting its positions and to have lasting peace in Ukraine also receive predominant approval in Bulgaria.

Germany enjoys 85% trust, France – 78%, Italy – 77%, the UK – 73%. A positive attitude towards the US is expressed by 52%, and towards Russia – 48% of adult Bulgarians. (7.03.2025)
