Menlo Park (dpa) – The Facebook parent company Meta now plans to introduce its AI features in the EU after months of delay. As a first step, a chatbot with artificial intelligence will initially be available in six European languages, as Meta announced. Over time, they want to achieve the same range of functions as in the USA, according to a blog post. A time frame for this was not given.
Meta AI was launched in the USA in 2023. In the European Union, the company suffered a setback last year: the responsible Irish data protection authority opposed the use of publicly accessible posts on Facebook and Instagram for training the AI. Chatbots with artificial intelligence are fed with vast amounts of information for training. At the time, Meta argued that using posts from the EU would better prepare the AI for the circumstances in Europe.
The chat assistant will be introduced for free across various apps of the company. Meta also includes the messaging services WhatsApp and Messenger. The introduction in 41 European countries is to begin this week.
However, EU spokespeople said that the Commission is still expecting an assessment, as certain aspects fall under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
In the USA, a so-called multimodal AI as part of Meta AI is among others available on the company’s connected glasses, which can process visual information and language. The frame has a camera – and users can ask the AI questions about what they are currently looking at.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously expressed criticism of the EU regulations. (March 20)
