The extraordinary summit of the European Council, which EU President António Costa has convened, will take place on Thursday.
The meeting has been called because of the “recent tensions over Greenland”.
Donald Trump has, since the beginning of the year, repeated his desire for ownership of Greenland, and in recent days the American president has increased the pressure.
Costa announced over the weekend that he would convene an extraordinary summit.
The announcement came in the wake of Trump threatening Denmark and seven other countries with an additional ten percent tariff from 1 February, until an agreement has been reached on American acquisition of Greenland.
Costa has written on X that, because of the “significance” of the recent developments, there must be a meeting of the European Council, which consists of the heads of state and government of the EU countries as well as the President of the European Commission.
Since Trump’s tariff announcement on Saturday, the EU countries have been considering a joint response, and on Sunday an emergency meeting was called among the EU ambassadors.
Costa has written on X that his recent talks with the EU countries have confirmed that there is support for Denmark and Greenland.
In general, there is a lot of meeting activity about Greenland these days. On Monday, Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen (V) attended a meeting with NATO’s Secretary General, Mark Rutte. It is taking place in Brussels, and the topics are Greenland and the Arctic.
Greenland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt, also took part in the meeting.
EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, also met with Troels Lund Poulsen and Motzfeldt on Monday.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) was in London on Monday. There he is meeting with a number of people, including the British Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper.
