Brussels (dpa) – According to the wishes of the finance ministers of the euro countries, the Croatian Boris Vujčić is to hold the position of Vice President at the European Central Bank (ECB) in the future. The finance ministers of the countries with the common currency agreed on this at a meeting in Brussels.
The position is becoming vacant because the current ECB Vice President, the Spaniard Luis de Guindos, will leave office as scheduled at the end of May. The appointment is to be confirmed by the EU heads of state and government at their summit at the end of March. Until now, the 61-year-old Vujčić has headed Croatia’s central bank.
Germany supported his nomination, according to government circles. “It is important to us to acknowledge the efforts of the new euro member states. Croatia also stands for a sound monetary policy.” The Adriatic country has been using the euro since 2023.
ECB top post also has to be filled
The term of office of ECB President Christine Lagarde will also end one and a half years later, in October 2027. There is already speculation about the Frenchwoman’s successor. Among others, two Germans, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel and ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel, have already thrown their hats into the ring.
When filling the posts, negotiators usually aim to ensure a balance between small and large, southern and northern euro countries. This also applies to the balance between supporters of a tight monetary policy and advocates of a more relaxed course. (19 January)
