Ljubljana – In Slovenia, we haven’t done enough about general calls for European elections, emphasized the Slovenian president Nataša Pirc Musar in a discussion with young people from Slovenian universities and high schools on the 20th anniversary of Slovenia’s entry into the EU. She urged the youth to participate in the elections.
Go to the elections and vote for the candidate you believe in, urged the president. She welcomed the fact that most parties have young people on their candidate lists and added that it is particularly in European elections that young people must vote, as the European Parliament is the only directly elected EU institution.
Before that, Pirc Musar spoke about numerous topics, from the Middle East crisis and the necessary reform of the United Nations to the rise of populism and green agendas.
Regarding the war in Gaza, she expressed regret that Europe did not achieve unity in response to this crisis as it did towards the war in Ukraine. In this context, she welcomed protests against the war and genocide. “You young people do feel that war is not the right solution,” she said.
Regarding green agendas, she estimated that the EU should remain a leading force and a model in this field. “Every populism is poison for democracy,” she said about the rise of populisms. (May 8th)
