Berlin – Emmanuel Macron deplored Sunday in Berlin the « fascination with authoritarianism » in Europe and called to « defend » democracy by going to vote in the next European elections, from June 6 to 9.
Today, « there is a form of fascination with authoritarianism that is born in our own democracies », he asserted during an exchange with the German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier in front of young people.
According to him, the conviction that is settling in, « is to say, basically, this Europe, it would be simpler if we were nationalist ».
« We let nationalists and often enemies of democracy reap all the dividends of democracy and criticize it in an existential way », he further regretted.
In this context, « it is important to go vote in the European elections for the party that we support and which is a party that defends Europe », he pleaded.
President Steinmeier welcomed the presence of Macron, « a signal that we need an alliance of democrats in Europe ». (26/05/2024)
