Brussels – Georgia is a partner for Romania, said Foreign Minister Luminiţa Odobescu on Monday before participating in the Foreign Affairs Council (CAE) in Brussels, emphasizing the need for support for the population of this country and its European path.
“For us, it is very important to have Georgia close, but it is evident that the adoption of this law (on ‘foreign influence’) undermines the European agenda and it is important to convey this message to the Georgian authorities. For Romania, Georgia is a partner, we must keep Georgia very close to the EU and continue to support the population,” said the head of diplomacy.
She emphasized that the adoption of the law on “foreign influence” in Georgia “undermines Georgia’s EU agenda.”
“Georgia must be (a country – ed.) predictable, consistent with its European agenda and Romania fully supports the European aspirations of the Georgian people,” added the minister.
The CAE agenda also includes the topic of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“We strongly condemn the recent attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. Therefore, it is important to increase military aid to Ukraine. Romania welcomes the adoption of the utilization of profits generated by frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine militarily and strongly supports a political agreement regarding the implementation of the financial plan to support Ukraine within the European Peace Facility,” Odobescu mentioned.
She added that Romania will continue to supply electricity to Ukraine.
“Given Russia’s intense and serious attacks on civilian infrastructure and, in particular, on energy infrastructure, we call for greater EU aid in this area,” Luminiţa Odobescu conveyed.
According to her, Romania supports the adoption of the 14th package of sanctions against Russia.
The minister claimed that Russia’s hybrid attacks have consequences “across the entire region.” She expressed solidarity with the Baltic countries facing “hybrid, provocative actions from Russia.”
Odobescu also mentioned the attempts of “hybrid interference” in the Republic of Moldova, a country “very vulnerable” in the context of the presidential elections and the referendum on EU integration.
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, also on the agenda of the meeting of EU foreign ministers, Luminiţa Odobescu said that our country supports efforts for a lasting ceasefire agreement and the resumption of political negotiations based on the two-state solution, as well as coordination in this file with the USA, UK, and regional partners.
