Brussels – Slovenia has called on the European Commission at the EU agriculture ministers meeting to continue placing animal welfare at the core of its program. It received support from 23 other member states, and Hungary, which will hold the presidency of the EU Council in the second half of the year, will also strive for this.
Among other things, Slovenia, which was already supported by Bulgaria, France, Portugal, and Sweden before the meeting, called for measures to improve conditions for animals in cages, which has already been supported by 1.4 million European citizens with the End of Cage Age petition. According to last year’s Eurobarometer survey, 95% of Slovenians oppose the use of cages in livestock farming.
At the same time, the State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Eva Knez, highlighted the fight against illegal dog trade and puppy farms and the need for a common European approach to this issue.
Knez also emphasized that the industry must adapt to new standards to avoid importing animal products from countries with lower animal welfare standards. We need a good strategy to implement the best solutions in all European countries, she emphasized. (May 27)
