BRUSSELS – We are for a quick understanding, said the Bulgarian interim Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev in Brussels, where he is participating in the working dinner of the state and government leaders of the European Union countries. This was the first meeting of EU leaders after the elections for MEPs.
The idea is for the European Parliament to start functioning as soon as possible, so that the bodies which are subject to approval by the MEPs can begin to function as well, added Glavchev.
Bulgaria has preliminary positions, said the Prime Minister regarding the first proposals for the next leaders of the European Commission and the European Parliament, and for the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs.
The Prime Minister expressed expectations that more specific decisions will be made at the regular meeting of the European Council on June 27-28. According to him, it is unlikely to be decided by the end of the month what the portfolio of the next Bulgarian commissioner will be.
More time and patience are needed to wait for the portfolio of the new Bulgarian commissioner; the EC is expected to be constituted in November, he noted. Next week, we expect the key positions to be clear, added Glavchev.
We are very far from the point of discussing the portfolio of the next Bulgarian commissioner, said the Prime Minister.
In the current composition of the EC, the Bulgarian commissioner is responsible for innovation, scientific research, culture, education, and youth.
In the new EP, Bulgaria will once again have 17 representatives. GERB-SDS (EPP) will have the most MEPs – five, DPS (Renew Europe) will have three representatives,
“BSP for Bulgaria” (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats) – two.
Three political formations from Bulgaria are sending representatives to the EP for the first time: “Continuing the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” & “Vazrazhdane” with three MEPs each, and “There Is Such a People” with one representative. (June 17, 2024)
