Brussels – The political group of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament has chosen MEP Romana Tomc from the Slovenian center-right party SDS as one of ten vice presidents of the group in the next Parliament session. She announced that she will clearly represent the conservative wing of the party.
Tomc, who won her third consecutive term as an MEP in Slovenia’s European elections ten days ago, was elected with 141 out of 170 valid votes.
“I am very pleased with this result and the confidence of the entire parliamentary group. The voting result has shown that we have tremendous support. Also, because in my speech – and otherwise my colleagues know my work – I clearly stated that I want the EPP to remain on the side where the voters gave it the most votes, and that I will be the clear conservative wing of the European People’s Party,” she said after the vote.
Regarding the support for Ursula von der Leyen for the President of the European Commission, she said that at the March congress, where the German politician was not supported as the EPP’s lead candidate in the European elections, SDS set clear conditions, namely that the EPP move to the right and connect with parties on the right.
Tomc became the first Slovenian MEP elected as vice president of the EPP group. However, the current foreign minister Tanja Fajon was vice president of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the 2014-2019 mandate. (June 19)
