Bratislava/Brussels – President Peter Pellegrini wants to push for certain clauses in the areas of the single market and the green economy during the ongoing two-day EU summit in Brussels. The president hinted at this upon his arrival at the European Council meeting, reports the Brussels correspondent of TASR.
The leaders of the EU member states will, according to the set plan, negotiate a strategic program for the years 2024 – 2029, the next institutional cycle, as well as measures to protect competitiveness and the single market.
For Slovakia, Pellegrini is attending the summit instead of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD). When mentioning the EU’s strategic agenda for the next five years, Pellegrini pointed out that on behalf of Slovakia, he will propose three supplements.
“In the field of competitiveness and the single market, I will insist on a clause on a uniform approach in all areas, for example, so that there are no problems with dual quality of food or a double standard applied to some member countries on the single market,” he said.
In the area of the green agenda, he wants the set goals not to be questioned, but at the same time for a “pragmatic approach” to prevail in solving this area, which he says has been complicated so far and not always accepted by European citizens.
“I want it not to be overlooked in the conclusions that one of the basic pillars of the EU is the social pillar, so that the Union does not distance itself from citizens, but really cares about whether the standard of living of people is decreasing or not,” he explained. He added that it is necessary to prevent what is already happening in some corners of Europe, where the trust of citizens in the common European project is gradually being questioned or reduced.
