Brussels – Ursula von der Leyen is nominated by European leaders for a second term as President of the European Commission. Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has been elected President of the European Council and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will become the next High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU.
It is the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk who first confirmed the news at around 11:30 PM on Thursday. Von der Leyen, Costa, and Kallas were previously put forward by the Christian Democrats, Socialists, and Liberals, but at the European summit in Brussels, the 27 leaders still had to vote on each of the three top positions.
All three received a large majority. Von der Leyen got 25 votes in favor of her nomination. Orban voted against, Meloni chose to abstain, a reliable source told Belga.
In the vote on Costa, Orban voted in favor, but Meloni voted against. Concerning Kallas’ nomination, Meloni again voted against, but Orban abstained.
