ATHENS – The answer to when Ukraine will become a NATO member depends on the development of the battlefield and the possibility of achieving a sustainable and just peace, said Bulgarian President Rumen Radev at a meeting organized by the “Economist” magazine in Athens. He expressed confidence that the decisions of the NATO Summit are a bridge to Ukraine’s future membership.
All allies are committed to their support for Kyiv. Ukraine is a sovereign state and has the freedom to decide, Radev noted.
According to him, NATO should not intervene in the military conflict, especially with ground troops on the battlefield.
A direct clash between NATO and Russia could escalate into a world war with nuclear weapons and devastating consequences. Such a scenario would not benefit Europe and Ukraine, President Radev stated.
The head of state emphasized that the solution to the conflict in Ukraine should be sought through diplomacy and dialogue.
This war has already turned into a war of attrition, a global economic clash, generating enormous human suffering and material damage, the Bulgarian president said and recalled that since the first day of the Russian military aggression, Bulgaria has been part of the EU’s common efforts for comprehensive support to Ukraine and its candidacy for EU membership.
Against the backdrop of this global landscape, the main goal of the EU should be to ensure stability, security, and prosperity for all its citizens, as well as its neighbors, Radev added. (02.07.2024)
