Strasbourg – Czech MEPs have different opinions on the resolution in support of Ukraine, which among other things condemns the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán‘s trip to Moscow and which was approved by the European Parliament (EP) today. Nine MEPs from the factions that submitted the draft resolution supported the document as expected. Four Czech representatives voted against it and six abstained. The first resolution approved after the June elections to the European Parliament was supported by 495 MEPs, 139 voted against it and 47 abstained today.
According to Ondřej Kolář, the EP has adhered to what is obvious, namely that “Russia is the aggressor and that it is the one who can end the war immediately.” The resolution was also supported by Ondřej Krutílek. “I think that many things that Viktor Orbán does, he does for his domestic audience,” he told Czech journalists in Strasbourg. According to Alexandr Vondra, it is good that the European Parliament has also adhered to “the military dimension of aid, supported NATO summit decisions to continue broad military support for Ukraine.”
“We support the direction of the resolution, namely to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia, but I do not agree with things that are disadvantageous for the Czech Republic, for example, to mandatorily give 2.5 percent to support Ukraine,” said Ondřej Knotek from the Patriots for Europe faction, which includes Orbán’s Fidesz party. “I find it very unfortunate that the resolution links support for Ukraine with a special proposal to punish a politician from another EU member state,” emphasized Nikola Bartůšek.
