The European Council approved an aid measure under the European Peace Mechanism worth 13 million euros, aimed at increasing the operational effectiveness of the Albanian Armed Forces, particularly in mobility, maneuvering, and protection.
The aid will also strengthen Albania’s capacities in relation to its participation in EU Common Security and Defense Policy operations and missions, as well as in any international coalition.
“Albania is a reliable security partner and an EU candidate country. Today’s decision is a significant achievement in our cooperation on security and defense. It also reflects our appreciation for Albania’s alignment with the EU Common Security and Defense Policy, a very clear expression of Albania’s strategic choice for a future within the EU,” said Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
This decision is a concrete result of the increasing engagement with Albania in the field of security and defense, reflecting Albania’s full alignment with the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy.
The European Peace Mechanism will provide equipment that is not designed to produce physical force elimination, and, where necessary, other supplies and services, including technical training. The Albanian Land Forces will receive light multifunctional armored vehicles. These vehicles are equipped to ensure high mobility and maneuverability in all types of terrain and weather conditions, as well as to provide personnel protection against light weapons and explosives.
The European Union Delegation in Tirana described this measure as another historic achievement.
“The EU Council approved an aid package of 13 million euros to support the Albanian Armed Forces under the European Peace Mechanism. This initiative aims to strengthen Albania’s military capabilities and increase regional security,” emphasized the EU Delegation.
The European Peace Mechanism was created in March 2021 to finance actions under the Common Foreign and Security Policy for conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and strengthening international security and stability. In particular, the European Peace Mechanism enables the EU to finance actions designed to strengthen the capacities of third states and regional and international organizations in military and defense matters. / (July 19)
