Brussels – The European Commission (EC) reiterated this Wednesday the European Union’s rejection of extrajudicial executions and its support for the Rule of Law, following the death of Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in an attack in Tehran while on an official visit.
“The EU has a principled position of rejecting extrajudicial executions and supporting the Rule of Law, also in international criminal justice,” said the community executive’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Peter Stano, to EFE.
He added that they are following “closely” the information “about the assassination of Hamas political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran last night.”
“We remember that the EU and other partners have classified Hamas as a terrorist organization, and that the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court was seeking an arrest warrant against Ismail Haniyeh on multiple charges of war crimes,” Stano pointed out.
He also called on all parties to “exercise maximum restraint and avoid any further escalation.”
“No country or nation will benefit from any further escalation in the Middle East,” he affirmed.
The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas confirmed this Wednesday the death of its leader in Tehran, where he was on an official visit, and blamed Israel for his assassination, warning that it “will not go unpunished.”
The supreme leader of Iran – where the attack took place -, Ali Khamenei, has already warned that his country will take revenge, as did the new Iranian president, Masud Pezeshkian, who warned Israel in a statement that the Islamic Republic “will defend its territorial integrity, its dignity, its honor and pride, and will make the invading terrorists regret.”
And Iran’s mission to the UN promised to respond to the assassination with a “special operation” which it described as severe and will generate “deep regret in the perpetrator.” (July 31)
