Barcelona – The until now director of communication and spokesperson of the European Parliament (EP), Jaume Duch, has left his position in the European Parliament to become Minister of EU and External Action of the Generalitat of Catalonia, a position he faces with the intention of “doing many things very well.”
In the department’s headquarters in the Casa dels Canonges after the swearing-in of all the ministers of the new government of Catalonia, presided over by the socialist Salvador Illa, the until now spokesperson of the EP has expressed his conviction that in his new task many things can be done “very well.”
Furthermore, he stated he is “very happy and very proud to have this opportunity to contribute to the Government of Catalonia” with his experience.
“I think many things can be done very well, I think I will surely find a very developed department that over the past years has been doing its job,” indicated the minister, who also expressed his desire to contribute his experience in the European Parliament to the Government.
For her part, the outgoing minister, Meritxell Serret, requested that Duch continue the foreign action policies and the “clear commitment to be this active, proactive, and reliable partner within the framework of European institutions.”
Serret also urged Duch to “continue giving a clear, unique, and always positive and constructive voice of what Catalonia’s position in the world is.”
After the news was announced, the president of the European Parliament, the Maltese Roberta Metsola, highlighted that Duch is a “respected expert.”
“With the appointment of Jaume Duch as minister, the region of Catalonia has gained a respected expert in the EU and in foreign policy,” she published on her account on X. (August 11 and 12)
