The European Union has allocated 74 million euros for humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations in Lebanon so far this year. It is ready to provide further assistance, the European Commission said on Monday.
There are over 90,000 new displaced persons in Lebanon, according to the latest data from the European Commission. Since October 2023, the country had already counted almost 112,000 displaced persons. Additionally, hundreds of civilians have recently been killed or injured.
“With this emergency aid, we aim to immediately create a lifeline for people in Lebanon, both citizens and refugees, affected by the wave of hostilities,” said Janez Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Crisis Management. “At this moment, all parties must adhere to international humanitarian law more than ever.”
The EU Foreign Ministers held an emergency meeting at 5:00 PM on Monday regarding the escalation of the situation in Lebanon. This telephonic meeting was convened by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. A possible European strategy is to be discussed during that meeting. No decisions will be made on Monday.
