Paris – French pork professionals fear being “the next on the list” and being subject to prohibitive tariffs by China, in conflict with the European Union “in the name of cars,” said the director of their organization on Friday to AFP.
After cognac producers, who already have to pay more to be sold in China, “we know we will be next on the list,” laments Anne Richard, director of the Inaporc interprofession, which brings together breeders and processors.
“We are handicapping the food sectors in the name of cars. Professionals refuse to be sacrificed,” she states.
The third-largest pork producer in the EU, France relies on China, its first export market, to sell parts that are little consumed in its home market (ears, feet…).
The Inaporc director is especially afraid of a “downward price spiral” in the European market if Spain and the Netherlands, which export pork to China, have to redirect some of the volumes to the continent. (October 18, 2024)
