The special commission against disinformation in Albania will be supported by the European Union with a group of experts from EU member states.
For this purpose, the EU is conducting training sessions where the European Union ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, emphasized that the work of the special commission should not undermine the freedom of the media in Albania.
“All initiatives to confront information manipulation and ensure media freedom cannot be at the expense of one another. The fight against foreign interference or disinformation is not just about regulating media online or, worse, moderating content, but requires a broader approach, including improving the legal framework regarding interference in democratic processes. Regarding transparency and broader access, consultations with civil society, which is very important, should continue,” Gonzato emphasized.
The head of the commission against disinformation, Erion Braçe, said that the work of this commission has highlighted the lack of a legal framework that our country has in relation to disinformation, as well as the formalization of online media.
“We are unprepared in terms of legal and infrastructural aspects to address disinformation and primarily cyber attacks,” Braçe stated.
The training sessions will be accompanied by a series of expert missions and will address topics aiming at all defined objectives with a focus on foreign interventions in democratic processes and disinformation, as well as the best practices of the European Union in this field.
The draft agenda has been prepared and consolidated by EU structures in Tirana and Brussels. (October 28)
