Bucharest – Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Senate President Nicolae Ciucă, and Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Monday congratulated Maia Sandu on her victory in the second round of the presidential elections in the Republic of Moldova, unanimously emphasizing the historical significance of this electoral result for the country’s future accession to the European Union.
In social media posts, Klaus Iohannis appreciated that this election victory “irreversibly anchors the country’s destiny in the European family,” while Nicolae Ciucă and Marcel Ciolacu told Moldovans that through their vote “they made history.” “Democracy and free voting have won! /…/ The Republic of Moldova continues its European path and its journey towards integration into the European Union,” wrote Ciucă, while for Ciolacu, “the victory of Maia Sandu is a clear proof of the Moldovan people’s will to defend their democracy and secure their path towards EU membership.”
Pro-European Maia Sandu, the candidate of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), won a new mandate, receiving 55.35% of the support of Moldovan voters, compared to 44.65% for Alexandr Stoianoglo, the pro-Russian socialist candidate, according to preliminary results presented by the Central Election Commission after the centralization of results from 99.86% of polling stations.
In March 2022, the Republic of Moldova submitted an application for EU membership, and three months later the European Council granted it candidate country status. In December 2023, EU leaders decided to begin accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova. In the 2023 conclusions on enlargement and the stabilization and association process, which assesses the progress made by each candidate country and EU partners on their European path, the Council welcomed the substantial progress made by the Republic of Moldova in achieving the objectives underpinning its candidate country status, in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine and the deployment of hybrid attacks against the Republic of Moldova itself.
Alongside the enlargement process, the EU and the Republic of Moldova cooperate to strengthen their political and economic relations, including through the Eastern Partnership. Since 2016, an association agreement has been in effect between the EU and the Republic of Moldova, and the partners are continually working to implement it, in order to further deepen Moldova’s political association with the EU and its economic integration into the EU.
